" I am someone who has grown up in New England, been educated totally in New England, and lived a good part of my adult life in New England, but has, for some reason, never set foot in Newport, R.I. I had heard about the rich heritage of Newport, going back for 100 years, but just never seen it for myself, until this summer when we went to the wedding of a son of dear friends in Newport this past summer. To be honest about it, I have not attended the last couple of HBS pre-reunion gatherings, and might not have made this one, but having seen Newport this once, I would absolutely relish the opportunity to go back for another visit. Newport is completely fascinating. The cliff walk along the water is absolutely spectacular. And as you walk along the cliff walk you see one incredible mansion after another, each one a monument to the barons and moguls of 100 plus years ago when these giants of the industrial revolution (such as the Astors and Vanderbilts) were competing with one another to display what they could do with their new-found wealth, and the result is something one just has to see. The Vanderbilt "Marble House" is truly on the scale of a mini-Versailles Palace. What a glorious piece of the country's industrial and commercial past is there to be seen less than an hour's drive from Boston. What could be a more appropriate setting for a 50th HBS reunion than this place of such importance to the country's business history."
